History of Medina Azahara

Medina Azahara - At 7 kilometers to the west from Cordoba 14001

A complex of steep streets, leads to the great eastern arcade, through which the different Embassies passed to be received by the Caliph. In front of this porch, a big square opened where the troops and the staff of the protocolary ceremonies concentrated themselves. Outside the compound of the Medina, the Mosque was built in no more than a month.

This solemn enclosure, suffered large destructions during the different wars that happened in Al-Andalus at the beginning of the 11th century, converting Madinat al-Zahara in ruins. The effort to create an ideal city only lasted seventy years; ephemeral life for what was the “favourite” of the first Caliph of Cordoba.
